Olympic Games Come Home to Greece  this Year

A couple of years ago I went Athens for a 3 day visit From Zante. It is Traffic_feb.JPG (274067 bytes) such  a  sprawling Cityunderground_feb.JPG (247264 bytes) that is alive for 24 hours a day, it is a totally different but thoroughly enjoyable experience from visiting the Islands.  I am looking forward to going again for the Olympic Games. returning to their spiritual home Greece  in 2004.

This is a stunning  photo of the Acropolis during the 2004 Olympic Games  Take a look at the full size image and imagine what it would look like if the Elgin Marbles were where they belonged.

Having visited the  Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens it is my firm conviction that the Parhtenon_Nov_feb.JPG (256550 bytes) artefacts that in an act of grand theft  were  plundered by Lord Elgin and  now displayed in the British Museum, should, without delay be returned to their rightful place. It is almost beyond belief that Grecians should have to come to England to view their own treasures in order to gather information and make copies of the looted artifacts to display near the Parthenon. Where, anywhere inparth._nov_feb.JPG (249865 bytes) the world is a more appropriate place for the originals to be displayed, along with the other priceless treasures than  in the proposed  new State of the Art Museum near the Acropolis.  I hope that soon our current British Government will have the political courage to make this long overdue gesture of goodwill and  return the marbles  to the Greek nation

Getting to Athens from Zakynthos is  quite a long journey. From the port at Zante a short ferry trip takes you to the  port of KYLLINI. Going To Athens by road has the added advantage of enabling you to see more of Greece on the way, including the church at PATRA  with its stunning interior,

Traveling on to Athens takes you to and across the canal at Corinth : This modern feat of civil engineering was from Aegean via the Argosaronic Gulf of to the Ionian sea
