This coastal road takes you through woodlands, Olive groves and yet is always just a few yards from  the Gulf of Argostoli, the Harbour and the busy waterfront

It also takes you to the Lighthouse St. Theodourus Lighthouse . Built by the Englishlighthousesunset1.jpg (79239 bytes) lighthouse1.jpg (37685 bytes) Governor Napier in 1829 but was destroyed by the 1875 earthquake and was rebuilt to the original plans. If you are near there at evening , it is possibly one of the best places on Kefelonia to watch the sunset. As you get nearer to Argostoli , near Fanari beach you will come across the Geological phenomenon the "Katavothres".  The water level here is over a meter lower than the rest of the sea Huge amounts of sea water disappears here and never return. Before W.W.2 the locals exploited this phenomenon and built a waterwheel that generatedwaterwheel3.jpg (122200 bytes) waterwheel2.jpg (48926 bytes) some electricity. Until 1963 it was not known where all the sea water went.  An Austrian geologist put 140 kg. of dye into the waters. The dye stained water appeared 14 days later at the villages of Fridi and Agia  Efemia and in the Melissani Lake on the other side of Kefelonia. The photo to the right is from a guide book but sadly it bears no resemblance to how the site of the "Katavothres" looks today as the whole area is somewhat rundown.

Argostoli is a busy port that caters for Ferries to neighbouring Islands , the Greek mainland and as a port of call for cruise ships

The Drapano Bridge that spans the lagoon survived the earthquakes. it was originally a wooden bridge and the British replaced it with a stone construction
